用简单的例子说明。your ability to solve the problem. 物主代词your作为限定词限定ability，表示主谓关系（you have the ability）。不定式为ability的定语。假如不需要属格的物主限定词表示这种主谓关系，也可以用of属格表示主谓关系。比如：Your friend's ability to solve the problem = the ability of your friend to solve the problem. 非常显然，of your friend 语法上是名词ability的后置定语，语义上表示的是主谓关系（your friend has the ability）, to do不定式仍然是ability的定语，而不是your friend的定语。因此介词of 后并非复合宾语结构，of介词短语和不定式分别作ability的定语。
